Choosing the right business name is one of the MOST important aspects of your marketing strategy.
Next to having a profitable idea, NAMING YOUR COMPANY is certainly in the top 3. This is like marriage—hopefully forever.
Pick a name that does not limit you. Example of what NOT to do: Afton Plumbing. This would suggest a limited service area, (the town of Afton, Virginia). Always think big and name your company with growth and expansion in mind.
Never pick a name you cannot get the domain for. (Example: www.YourBrandName.com)
Finally, it is never a bad idea to go to your State Corporation Commission website to see if someone already has registered that name. (If you follow my first rule, this is highly unlikely.)
Bonus: Don’t be so creative that no one knows exactly what your business does. There is a storefront business in our area called Fruit Fix. I finally found out they fix iPhones. Bad Name! While they were attempting to be clever in alluding to the Apple Inc. brand, they failed to connect it in a way that would make sense to customers.
